What is Staghorn Coral?

Staghorn coral is a fast-growing branching coral found throughout the Caribbean and western Atlantic. Named for its resemblance to a deer's antlers, its intricate structure creates valuable habitat for fish, invertebrates, and countless other reef organisms. Once abundant across many reefs, staghorn coral remains a key species in reef restoration efforts today.

Why does Staghorn Coral matter?

Few corals contribute to reef growth as quickly as staghorn coral. Its branching colonies provide shelter for juvenile fish, feeding areas for marine life, and structure that helps support overall reef biodiversity. Healthy staghorn populations are often an indicator of a thriving reef ecosystem.

What are the threats to Pillar Coral?

Despite restoration successes, staghorn coral continues to face threats from rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, disease outbreaks, storm damage, and declining water quality. These pressures have caused significant declines compared to historic population levels.

Restoration & Hope

Because staghorn coral can grow relatively quickly, it has become a major focus of coral restoration programs. Conservation groups cultivate fragments in underwater nurseries before transplanting them back onto reefs. Researchers also study disease resistance and genetic diversity to help build stronger, more resilient coral populations.
